A simple black shift that transitions right into fall is the jumping off point for this week’s art inspired fashion post, and with Halloween just around the corner, Will Barnett’s beautiful woman and black cat painted in 1970, seemed like a perfect choice. Less than a year ago, Mr. Barnett passed away at the age of 101 and he was prolific. Chances are you’ve seen his work–it’s in almost every major collection and museum in the U.S. Although he was also an abstract painter in the 40s and 50s and then went back to abstract work again in 2003, Barnett was most famous for his dream like figurative paintings and prints that transcend their mundane settings.

For those of you living in cooler climates, a chunky sweater and tights would make this a cozy fall outfit and probably exactly how I’ll want to wear my version of this luxe Rick Owens shift as the weather starts to get cold. I also love the mustard, taupe, and red trim in the painting as inspiration for accessorizing this outfit. As for the girl/lady’s porcelain skin, a little Laura Mercier foundation is always helpful when it comes to a smooth finish and for some reason the painting’s ghost-bird made me think of this kitch-fantastical 70s classic.

Are you ready for a pre-Halloween weekend? What are your thoughts about Will Barnett’s painting and a tried and true relaxed little black dress for fall?

I can’t say I’m familiar with Will Barnett’s art but I’m intrigued to learn more now. That black shift dress is open to endless styling possibilities!

Just bought a chunky sweater and scarf to wear when the weather gets colder. Still very mild here in France.
