Art Inspired: Vincen Van Gogh, Starry Night

The Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is probably one of the most over-exposed pieces of art in the history of the world, yet even so, it’s still my favorite Van Gogh painting of all. He only sold one painting in the course of his life and it was not this one–but there’s something about The Starry Night that makes me feel breathless, uplifted, and teary all at the same time. Painted a year before his death from a self-inflicted gun wound, it depicts the view outside his sanitarium room at Saint-Remy-de-Provence that he painted by memory during the day.

There are lots of theories about the painting–that the stylized rendition of a nightscape was induced by Van Gogh’s epilepsy; that it’s a religious painting based on Van Gogh’s early years when he wanted to dedicate his life to evangelization; some make a comparison between the eleven stars  in the painting and the eleven stars mentioned in Genesis. But in a letter to his brother Theo, Vincent wrote,”At last I have a landscape with olive trees and also a study of a starry sky…It’s not a return to romantic or religious ideas.”

We’ll never know the true story, but it’s simple beauty makes The Starry Night the most fitting image I can think of for Christmas eve. Below is trustyourstyle’s idea of the perfect X-mas eve ensemble {although in the hectic rush of the season, I’ve only managed to pull together the perfume, lipstick and handbag–of course}.

What are your plans for this starry starry night?
