I thought it would be fun to chronicle six weeks of beautiful bather paintings as they inspire fashion. This week’s Large Bathers by French artist Paul Cézanne, was first exhibited in 1906 and is considered to be one of the blockbusters of Modern Art. He worked on it seven years and it was unfinished at the time of his death, and yet this piece, the largest of all his bathing paintings, is considered to be his masterpiece.

During his own life, Cézanne was mostly ignored, his painting The Card Players became the most expensive painting ever sold to date ($250 million). He’s now considered the maverick painter who bridged the gap between the reigning style of Impressionism and Cubism, which he paved the way for through his use of geometric shapes to explore depth of field. His influence on Matisse and Picasso was so great that they have both been quoted as saying “Cézanne is the father of us all.”

At the time of his death he was unknown to the general public, but the generation of great painters both ahead of him and behind him, knew that he was on to something. Monet owned 14 Cézannes, 3 of which hung in his bedroom. Cézanne’s mentor and teacher, the Impressionist painter Pissarro, owned 21 of his paintings, Picasso owned 4. Matisse had one near his easel while he painted, and Gauguin would take his favorite Cézanne to a nearby restaurant to expound on it’s amazing qualities.

Large Bather’s palette of delicate blues, creams, tans and whites feel so perfect for the hottest summer days.

Love the painting, love Cézanne! Wish I could afford the original … but probably will just have to settle for a print and maybe that beautiful beach towel.

By the way, I was just reading about Pissaro a few weeks ago and have to admit that I didn’t really know much about him.

I am such a fan of Paul Cézanne, and this Large Bathers aiitngPaul Cézanne. It’s very interesting how Matisse and Monet, and others cherished his works as well, although unknown to the public much.

I am so glad you wrote about Cezanne, I posted a bit of his redecorated garden in Aix-en-Provence and I want to buy a book where I can find more pictures with his studio. I would certainly wear blue with white

I really loved it when fashion and art are combining in one post. I believe that fashion has it’s base on art.
