Along with Picasso and Warhol, Frida Kahlo is considered one of the most iconic artist of the 20th century, although she only had only one solo show in the U.S. during her lifetime. Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird has always been my favorite Frida Kahlo painting tied with The Two Fridas, but since today is the 99th art inspired fashion post on TrustYourStyle, I chose this more festive self portrait, which was the first work by a 20th century Mexican artist to be purchased by the Louvre. {Keep reading because I have a fun treat for you at the end of this!}

Kahlo’s work and personal life were deeply intertwined. Her physical condition, first polio then a tragic bus accident resulting in excruciating life-long pain, informed her paintings along with Mexican culture and mythology and her stormy marriage to Diego Rivera. Rivera was a huge influence on her style but it wasn’t until she left him in 1939 and went to Paris where she became friends with Marcel Duchamp and Picasso that she painted one of her most famous works, The Two Fridas.

I feel like Frida herself might have liked this updated version of her look, especially the kicks, so I’m excited to announce that TrustYourStyle has teamed up with Inkkas to give away a pair of their beautiful handmade shoes to a lucky TrustYourStyle reader! Everything on the shoes from the fabric, laces, tags, labels, thread and soles are all locally produced in South America. When a consumer buys an Inkkas shoe they are supporting real communities and artisans all over South America. Even if you don’t win, anyone who pledges to the Kickstarter campaign for Inkkas will receive 25% off the current price of the shoes and will receive their orders before the line is available to the general public.

To enter to win a free pair of these super cool Inkkas: leave a comment below and Like our Facebook page (if you haven’t already). The winner (via the random number generator) will be announced next Monday!

P.S. you can live anywhere in the world and still win a pair!

Outfit Details: Erdem blouse, Mary Jo Matsumoto Scandalous Lover 4FREE Nail Color, Inkkas sneakers, J.Crew jeans, Frida Kahlo bracelet, Mary Jo Matsumoto Cobalt Stingray clutch, Betsey Johnson bird earrings.

Minus the heinous brow, I’ve always loved her look. I want to wear huge flowers in my hair. LOVE this shirt.

I saw the ones on your Facebook page, and love ’em! I went shopping the other day, making a conscious effort to stay away from blacks, browns, and greys. (I’ve got plenty!) … But it was nearly impossible. Everything is very dark and neutral this season–with two-tone colorblocking or simple stripes. So it’s refreshing to see a pop of color and fun patterns for fall and winter.

Love the cause and companies that give back!

oh frida! she is one of my absolute favorites. and i think it is for what you mentioned about her personal life being such a part of her art work. for me it’s almost like poetry. there’s so much that is represented in her work i can’t help but feel overwhelmed every time i see it (in the best way of course). love your inspired collection. and wow! the 99th! that is amazing!! xo
